Why is an FSSAI license required for restaurants?
Entrepreneurs and restaurant owners are well aware that the FSSAI License serves a crucial legal purpose. However, the majority of them are in charge of a few of the other vital responsibilities that the FSSAI License fulfills. Here are some of the applications for an FSSAI License.
- Consumer education
When it comes to food quality, FSSAI is the gold standard. Consumers are aware of this, particularly in light of recent events. FSSAI is frequently mentioned in the news, with eateries being delisted in different areas. An FSSAI certification stamp then serves as an authority and quality control measure for a restaurant, increasing brand confidence.
- Legal requirement
Needless to say, FSSAI registration is a legal requirement for each restaurant, regardless of size. The FSSAI registration process is time-consuming (about 2 months) and involves many rounds of quality control. If a restaurant is detected operating without a proper license, a hefty fine is levied.
- FSSAI Logo – A Promotional Tool
An FSSAI logo also serves a marketing purpose. Restaurants put the logo at the outlet on their menu cards and other places where it catches the customer’s eye. Restaurants can utilize the logos as well as the unique FSSAI ID. It is regarded as a powerful symbol of legitimacy, quality, and an assurance standard for consumers.
- Business growth
An FSSAI registration facilitates business expansion. If you are expanding from a single city presence to a multi-city presence, you may need to upgrade your FSSAI License as well (from a State License to a Central License). If you already have a presence in numerous cities, adding a new city will be a breeze. With a central license, you are legally permitted to sell food commercially throughout India (as long as you have the other essential licenses of course). The FSSAI License assists you in establishing your brand and making it easier to build your business. The license also makes it easier to obtain bank loans and funds for business expansion.
Other licenses required for your restaurant (apart from the FSSAI)
An FSSAI License is likely the first license that allows a restaurant to operate legally. Having one will undoubtedly put you on the correct track. However, there is a slew of other licenses that a restaurant must get in order to be legally compliant. Here’s a complete list of all the other licenses you’ll need for your business.
- Liquor Permit
If you intend to offer liquor at your restaurant, you must obtain a Liquor License. This can be obtained from the Local Excise Commissioner, the forms for which can be found on the respective State Government websites. This license is required since selling liquor without one is a punishable offense.
- Health/Trade Permit
This license ensures that your restaurant is free of all potential health hazards as listed on the Health Department’s list. After you submit the form and documentation, it will take around 60 days to be issued to you.
A restaurant owner can apply for a Health/Trade License at CSB or online. The forms are available on the website of the State Municipal Corporation or at Zonal Citizen’s Service Bureaus. Municipal Corporations have the authority to close eateries that do not have this license.
